Self- Leadership: Why All Leaders Need to Look Inward First
- Akua Mensah
When we think about project management, we often picture someone juggling timelines, coordinating teams, and navigating shifting priorities. But today—as artificial intelligence transforms how we plan, automate, and analyze—I believe there’s one critical leadership skill that remains uniquely human and irreplaceable: the ability to look inward.
While AI can streamline tasks and surface insights, it can’t replicate emotional intelligence, self-awareness, or the internal discipline required to lead with authenticity and vision. This, to me, is the essence of self-leadership.
My work is rooted in helping professionals develop these deeply embedded soft skills—because I believe this will have a significant impact on the future of leadership. In a fast-evolving world, it’s not just technical knowledge that sets leaders apart, but the capacity to connect, adapt, and inspire with purpose. I’m deeply committed to supporting others in cultivating this kind of leadership—because it’s how we create impact that lasts, and teams that truly thrive.
Self-leadership—grounded in honest reflection, personal accountability, and intentional growth—isn’t just a nice-to-have. It’s a distinctly human advantage in an increasingly automated world.
The Impact of Brutal Honesty
Strong project managers don’t just keep their teams accountable—they hold themselves to the same, if not higher, standards. Being honest with yourself isn’t always easy, but it’s essential. It means asking tough questions: Am I avoiding this task because it’s tough, or because I’m afraid of falling short? Am I blaming circumstances when the real issue is my own focus?
This kind of radical honesty helps you spot weaknesses in your approach before they snowball into bigger problems. It cuts through the excuses and lets you take full ownership of your actions and outcomes. The result? A deeper level of trust in yourself—and from your team.
Self-Awareness Isn’t Optional—It’s Foundational
Emotional intelligence as we know is a key part of effective leadership, with self-awareness at its core. It involves understanding how you respond to stress, recognizing how your leadership style affects others, and identifying the personal patterns that either support or hinder your effectiveness.
Self-awareness extends beyond emotions; it also encompasses how you plan, prioritize, and delegate. A self-aware project manager understands their strengths and acknowledges areas where they need support. They actively address their blind spots—whether through skill development or by relying on team members. Practices like journaling, seeking feedback, or taking a few moments for daily reflection can help hone this skill over time.
The Power of Everyday Discipline
Big wins are exciting—but they’re built on the back of small, consistent actions. Showing up to meetings prepared, closing open actions, following up with stakeholders—these are staple actions, create a rhythm of reliability and progress over time, and set the tone for your entire team. When people see you leading with consistency, they’re more likely to follow suit, and that’s how you build a culture of accountability without having to micromanage.
Aligning Personal Goals With Professional Growth
It’s easy to focus entirely on project outcomes—budgets, timelines, and deliverables—but what about your own development as a leader? What kind of project manager do you want to be by the end of this sprint, quarter, or year? What habits are you trying to build? What personal roadblocks are you working through?
Setting personal goals keeps your growth on track. When those goals are aligned with your values, they become a powerful internal motivator. They help you push through challenges, bounce back from mistakes, and stay grounded in the bigger picture—both professionally and personally.
By embracing honest reflection, nurturing self-awareness, sticking to small but impactful habits, and setting meaningful goals, you elevate your leadership from functional to exceptional, and you don’t just manage projects—you inspire people.
