3D Kidney Printing

One standout project this year is by Trestle Biotherapeutics, aiming to revolutionize kidney transplants and treat chronic kidney disease through 3D-printed, bioengineered kidneys. Each year, 90,000 people are on kidney transplant waitlists in the United States alone, yet only 20,000 transplants are performed. Globally, over 800 million people live with kidney disease, and many endure the physical toll of dialysis. Recognizing these pressing needs, Trestle's team of scientists and project managers is working to generate 3D-printed kidney tissue that could alleviate transplant shortages, reduce the need for dialysis, and improve patients' quality of life.

Founded in 2020, Trestle Biotherapeutics has already achieved major project milestones by acquiring technology from Harvard’s Stem Cell Institute and forming strategic partnerships with researchers to develop kidney tissue with advanced architecture and functionality. This cutting-edge project has a clear roadmap with three development phases, currently in Phase 2, which focuses on increasing the size, scale, and complexity of bioengineered tissues. The culmination of Phase 3 would enable clinical trials and, if successful, pave the way for commercial use.
